Washington Island, Door County, Wisconsin

October 2005

Washington Island is separated from the Door County Peninsula by a passage of water called Death's Door by the Native Americans, named Les Porte des Morte by the first French explorers, which also gave name to the County.  Washington Island is 5 square miles with 650 permanent residents.  Most of the residents are descendents from Norway, Denmark and Sweden, and they proudly display the country's flags.  The oldest Icelandic settlement is also on this island due to the influence of the wealthy inventor Chester H. Thordarson.
